After more than 150 years of British colonial rule, the Republic of Sierra Leone gained full independence on April 27, 1961. The Pobjoy Mint celebrates the 60th anniversary of Sierra Leones independence in 2021 with a beautiful, limited edition proof.

Near the largest city of Freetown lie the Lion Mountains. The Portuguese name for the region is Serra Leoa, the Portuguese phrase for lioness mountains. Although the Republic of Sierra Leone has gained its independence from the United Kingdom, it remains a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, a bloc of 54 states around the globe, the majority of which are former British colonies.

Obverse designs on the 2021 Proof Republic of Sierra Leone 60th Anniversary of Independence Coins include the national coat of arms. The seal of the Republic offers a spade-shaped shield with zig-zag lines representing the Lion Mountains and blue waves representing the Harbor of Freetown. There are three torches above the mountains and a lion passant on the shield. Rampant lions support the shield, with grass below and palm trees on either side.

Reverse visuals on 2021  Republic of Sierra Leone 60th Anniversary of Independence Coins feature a lion lying on a rock. There is an acacia tree in the background with a celebratory inscription above the lion.

The coins in this release are struck with sterling silver, resulting in .925 silver purity.
