The silver coin is the second in a series inspired by Central America’s most powerful tribe. The leitmotif this time is the Aztec pyramids. Built in central Mexico, they were monumental religious structures erected in honor of the gods. The most famous of these are the Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacán, although this city was built before the reign of the Aztecs, who later adapted them. These pyramids functioned as temples where offerings, including human sacrifices, were made to win over the deities. Their impressive architecture reflects the power and technological sophistication of the Aztec civilization. The pyramids remain a testament to the rich culture and religion of pre-Columbian America.
On the reverse of the silver coin we see a fragment of an Aztec city with a monumental pyramid towering above it. All this is shown against a background of an overcast sky covering the setting sun. The obverse depicts different historical versions of the Mexican emblem, where an eagle devours a snake. In the center of the obverse is placed the most recent reproduction of the emblem. The obverse was covered with a layer of gold, which added additional character to the coin. The coin was issued in an edition of 500 pieces, and is delivered in a square cap with a dedicated cardboard wrapper.
The coin is no longer official legal tender, as it is an altered version of the original legal tender.
