The hourglass is a simple device for tracking the passage of time. Believed to have been developed in the 8^th century, the hourglass consists of two glass bulbs that are arranged vertically and connected by a narrow neck that helps regulate the flow of fine sand through the two bulbs from the upper into the lower.
