Description
Celebrating 450 Years of the Lion Dollar
First struck in 1575, the Lion Dollar remains one of history’s most influential coins. To mark its 450th anniversary, the Royal Dutch Mint presents the 2025 Ascension Island Lion Dollar 1 oz Silver Proof Coin. Designed by Jody Clark, best known for the final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, this piece reimagines the first Lion Dollar from Dordrecht with a fresh, modern perspective.
A Coin That Shaped Global Trade
The Lion Dollar was created because traders needed a reliable silver currency. Its bold lion design quickly earned trust in markets across Europe, Asia, and Africa. The coin also reached New Amsterdam, the Dutch settlement that became New York. Over time, its name and influence inspired the world’s most famous currency: the American Dollar. This 2025 issue links that remarkable history to today’s collectors.
Historic and Modern Design
On the obverse, the coin shows the lion of Holland along with the Latin motto “CONFIDENS DNO NON MOVETVR”—“He who trusts in the Lord is unwavering.” Clark’s initials, plus the mint and privy marks, are also present. The reverse carries the Coat of Arms of Ascension Island, paired with a harnessed knight resting his hand on the arms of Holland. Together, these elements bridge 16th-century tradition with modern minting.
Premium Silver and Unique Presentation
Struck in 1 oz of .999 fine silver, this proof coin measures 38.7 mm with smooth edges. It comes housed in a square wooden holder enhanced with blue acrylic and a map of New Amsterdam. The design reflects the ships that once carried the Lion Dollar across oceans, while also highlighting its role in international trade.
Limited to Just 2,000 Coins
The worldwide mintage is capped at 2,000 pieces, making it both rare and meaningful. Collectors will value its proof finish, historic design, and cultural significance. Therefore, the 2025 Ascension Island Lion Dollar stands out as more than silver—it is a story of strength, commerce, and legacy.
