In 1554, Italian goldsmith Giorgio Ghisi created the original shield not for battle but to impress. Its detailed scenes of mythology, heroism, and imperial power reflect the classical ideals of the Renaissance.

Spectres honors this masterpiece with a coin shaped in convex and concave form to match the shield’s curve. At 70 mm in diameter, it offers a larger canvas than most 2 oz coins, revealing every scroll, lion mask, and mythological figure.

The reverse shows the central battle scene surrounded by Roman warriors and allegorical figures, finished in antique high relief. The obverse includes the legal tender value of 5 dollars, issued by Niue in 2025.
