Mathematics is the language of nature and the Golden Ratio has baffled scientists for centuries. Showing up everywhere from snail shells to financial markets and all the way to galaxies, this peculiar law of nature seeps into everything. This coin celebrates this phenomenon – can you find all examples and references in the design?

As a legal tender offering of Tokelau, the coin’s obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadly effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include: “TOKELAU. 5 DOLLARS. 2022. 1 OZ FINE SILVER . ELIZABETH II.” Offset from the effigy of Her Majesty is a sphere with curved triangles that gives way to a pseudo-paisley design. This gives way to a cross-like pattern that features a similar triangle design. A solid layer precedes a star-shaped circle. Each progressive level is smaller than the one before it. The background features stylized pinwheel shapes.

The reverse side of the coin features a myriad of shapes that fit the parameters of the golden ratio. Three rectangles appear to be rotating on a common axis, and each contains a variety of shapes and designs. The background is filled with the same design as the obverse’s background.
