The reverse displays a depiction of the “El Ángel” or Angel of Independence, a monument built in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, is on top of the column. She holds a laurel wreath in her hand, signifying victory, and a broken chain in the other, depicting freedom. A backdrop of the Mexican landscape features two famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
