Created by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, under his pen name Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has never been out of print since  it was first published in 1865. Some 150 years later, the fantastical tale of a young girl’s journey into Wonderland is still cherished by adults and children alike. The story is a classic example of literary nonsense, a  popular form of writing in the mid-nineteenth century. Whilst Carroll’s  words weave endless possibilities for our imagination, graphic humorist  and political cartoonist Sir John Tenniel provided charming illustrations  that helped bring the story to life – one of which features on the reverse  of this £5 coin.
