2026 Canada Exceptional Discoveries – Dinosaurs of Canada 5 oz Silver Proof Coin
A Scientific Discovery Transformed Into Numismatic Art
The 2026 $50 Canada Exceptional Discoveries – Dinosaurs of Canada 5 oz Silver Proof Coin captures one of the most remarkable paleontological finds ever uncovered in Canada. The Royal Canadian Mint strikes this impressive coin in 5 oz of 99.99% pure silver, and it transforms a real fossil discovery into a dual-sided visual narrative that merges science, technology, and artistry.
At the heart of the design is a rare Gorgosaurus libratus specimen discovered in Alberta’s Dinosaur Provincial Park in 2009. Researchers identified something extraordinary within the fossilized remains: preserved evidence of a last meal. Because of this discovery, scientists gained new insight into how juvenile tyrannosaurs fed differently from adults. The coin brings this moment of scientific importance to life through an innovative dual-relief minting approach.
Double-Dimension Relief: A Mint First Innovation
The Royal Canadian Mint introduces its Double-Dimension Relief technology on this release. In fact, this marks the first time the Mint applies Super Incuse relief on the obverse while pairing it with Ultra High Relief on the reverse.
On the obverse, the design uses Super Incuse striking to recreate a dig site. A deep trench surrounds the fossil impression, reaching a depth of 1.5 mm. This technique creates a tactile excavation effect that draws the viewer into the discovery process itself.
In contrast, the reverse uses Ultra High Relief to reimagine the prehistoric world. A young Gorgosaurus appears in motion as it pursues a yearling Citipes elegans. Because of the elevated relief, the scene gains strong dimensional depth and movement. As a result, the coin delivers a dynamic predator-prey narrative set in the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 75 million years ago in what is now southern Alberta.
Artistic Collaboration and Scientific Accuracy
The reverse design is created by acclaimed paleoartist Julius Csotonyi, while the obverse is struck from a design by Steven Rosati. Moreover, the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology reviews the design for scientific accuracy, which reinforces its educational and collectible credibility.
The MintLAB program, which produced this coin, focuses on experimental minting techniques. These pieces originate from the Royal Canadian Mint’s research and development division. Therefore, each release represents a working innovation prototype that tests new minting capabilities.
In addition, MintLAB coins include exclusive packaging and a Chief Technology Officer–signed certificate. This presentation underscores their experimental nature and limited availability.
Specifications and Limited Mintage Appeal
The coin measures 65.25 mm in diameter and features a serrated edge for added detail and security. It comes packaged in a black wood case with a graphic beauty box that reflects its scientific theme and premium presentation standard. The obverse carries the $50 Canadian legal tender designation.
With a strictly limited mintage of only 647 coins worldwide, this release stands among the rarest modern Royal Canadian Mint collectibles. As a result, it holds strong appeal for both numismatists and dinosaur enthusiasts who value scarcity, innovation, and storytelling in precious metal form.
