Description
2006 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set – 3 Troy Oz, .999 Fine Silver
The 2006 20th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set marks a historic milestone for the American Silver Eagle series. In 2006, the United States Mint celebrated 20 years of the nation’s most popular silver bullion program. As a result, it released this special three-coin set featuring a Burnished Uncirculated, Proof, and Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. Each coin contains 1 Troy ounce of .999 fine silver, bringing the total metal weight to 3 Troy ounces (93.31 grams) across the set.
Most importantly, 2006 introduced the first-ever Reverse Proof Silver Eagle. Additionally, it marked the debut of the burnished finish. Both minting techniques have continued in later releases, but this set remains the origin point. Therefore, collectors widely recognize it as one of the most significant modern U.S. Mint issues.
Historic Firsts and Limited Mintage
The United States Mint produced this anniversary set at the West Point Mint and the Philadelphia Mint. West Point struck the Burnished and Proof coins, each bearing the “W” mint mark. Meanwhile, Philadelphia produced the Reverse Proof coin.
Because the Mint limited production to only 248,875 sets, demand has remained strong. Consequently, this release continues to hold lasting collectible appeal. Each coin carries a $1 USD face value and features a 40.6 mm diameter, 2.98 mm thickness, and a classic reeded edge.
Iconic American Design
On the obverse, Adolph A. Weinman’s timeless Walking Liberty design captures Liberty striding toward the rising sun. She carries branches of oak and laurel while the American flag flows around her. This design first appeared in 1916 and still represents freedom and optimism today.
On the reverse, John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield displays strength and national pride. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing readiness and peace.
The Reverse Proof coin stands out in particular. Unlike a traditional proof, the Mint applied the mirror-like finish to the design elements, while the background appears frosted. As a result, the contrast creates a dramatic and highly sought-after appearance.
Official Presentation and Preservation
The complete set arrives in the Original Government Packaging (OGP). The Mint secured each coin in an airtight holder to protect its finish. Furthermore, the collection rests inside a leatherette presentation box with a gold-embossed top pad. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies the set, confirming its origin and specifications.
