Description
Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin – Random Year – AU Condition
The Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coin stands among the most respected gold coins in American history. The United States Mint introduced this $20 gold piece in 1850, making it the first coin of its denomination ever struck for circulation. At the time, it represented significant wealth. Today, it remains a trusted choice for both collectors and investors.
James Barton Longacre designed the Liberty Double Eagle, and the U.S. Mint produced it from 1850 to 1907. Each coin contains .9675 troy ounces of actual gold weight and features 90% gold purity, alloyed with copper for added strength. The coin measures 34 mm in diameter, 2.41 mm thick, and displays a classic reeded edge. Multiple U.S. Mint facilities struck these coins, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Dates and mint marks vary based on current inventory.
An Iconic American Gold Design
The obverse showcases Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty.” Thirteen stars surround her portrait, honoring the original colonies. This elegant design gives the coin its well-known nicknames, including the Liberty Head and Coronet Double Eagle.
On the reverse, a heraldic eagle holds an olive branch and arrows while a shield rests on its chest. The inscriptions “United States of America” and the denomination encircle the design. Over time, the Mint introduced three design types, including versions with the “In God We Trust” motto. Because we select coins based on stock, specific types cannot be guaranteed in advance.
Finite Supply and Strong Investment Appeal
Although the Mint produced large quantities, the government melted many Pre-1933 gold coins in the 1930s after removing the dollar from the gold standard. This action permanently reduced the surviving supply. As a result, each remaining coin represents both gold value and American history.
We offer these coins in circulated condition, meaning they retain detail with light wear. Each coin ships in an individual protective plastic sleeve.
In the early 2000s, collectors paid premiums exceeding 200% over spot gold for Pre-33 coins. Today, premiums sit near decade lows and often match or fall below modern 1 oz Gold Eagles. Therefore, buyers can secure nearly a full ounce of historic U.S. gold at highly competitive pricing.
As a family-owned business established in 1915, we bring 100+ years of experience in precious metals to every transaction. We focus on education, transparency, and providing the most competitive prices in the industry. Our goal is simple: deliver authentic historic gold with confidence and long-term value.
