Description

Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin – Random Year – Circulated Condition

The Pre-33 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle Coin offers collectors and investors the opportunity to own authentic 19th and early 20th century American gold. Having circulated in the United States more than 100 years ago, this historic coin blends tangible gold value with rich national heritage. In addition, today’s relatively low premiums over spot gold make it an attractive option for portfolio diversification.

The United States Mint struck the Liberty Gold Half Eagle from 1838 through 1907, with production continuing into 1908 for the final type. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, each coin contains approximately .2418–.2419 troy ounces of actual gold weight and features a .900 gold purity alloyed for durability. Measuring 21.6 mm in diameter with a thickness of 1.59 mm and a classic reeded edge, this $5 face value coin represents a significant chapter in early U.S. commerce.

A Classic Liberty Head Design

On the obverse, Gobrecht presents Lady Liberty in left-profile portrait. She wears a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty,” while thirteen stars encircle her image in honor of the original colonies. The year of issue appears below, reinforcing the coin’s historic identity.

The reverse showcases the heraldic eagle with wings spread wide and a shield across its chest. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing strength and peace. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions “United States of America” and the denomination. During its long production run, the U.S. Mint introduced minor design modifications. As a result, two primary variations exist.

Mint facilities in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans, Denver, Dahlonega, and Charlotte all contributed to this historic series. Dates and mint marks on these random-year coins will vary based on available inventory.

Historic Scarcity and Investment Appeal

In 1933, the federal government removed the dollar from the gold standard and ordered the recall of circulating gold coins. Officials melted many pieces into gold bars to strengthen national reserves during the Great Depression. Consequently, surviving Pre-1933 gold coins now represent a limited and finite supply.

We offer these coins in circulated condition, and each piece ships securely in a protective plastic flip. Although they have seen use in commerce, they retain the defining elements of this timeless design.
